Amazon Turns to Anthropic’s Claude for Alexa AI Revamp

Amazon Turns to Anthropic’s Claude for Alexa AI Revamp

[ad_1]

Amazon’s revamped Alexa due for release in October ahead of the U.S. holiday season will be powered primarily by Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence models, rather than its own AI, five people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Amazon plans to charge $5 to $10 a month for its new “Remarkable” version of Alexa as it will use powerful generative AI to answer complex queries, while still offering the “Classic” voice assistant for free, Reuters reported in June.

But initial versions of the new Alexa using in-house software simply struggled for words, sometimes taking six or seven seconds to acknowledge a prompt and reply, one of the people said.

That’s why Amazon turned to Claude, an AI chatbot developed by startup Anthropic, as it performed better than the online retail giant’s own AI models, the people said.

Reuters based this story upon interviews with five people with direct knowledge of the Alexa strategy. All declined to be named as they are not authorized to discuss non-public matters.

Alexa, accessed mainly through Amazon televisions and Echo devices, can set timers, play music, act as a central hub for smart home controls and answer one-off questions.

But Amazon’s attempts to convince users to shop through Alexa to generate more revenue have been mostly unsuccessful and the division remains unprofitable.

As a result, senior management has stressed that 2024 is a critical year for Alexa to finally demonstrate it can generate meaningful sales – and the revamped paid version is seen as a way both to do that and keep pace with rivals.

“Amazon uses many different technologies to power Alexa,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement in response to detailed Reuters questions for this story.

“When it comes to machine learning models, we start with those built by Amazon, but we have used, and will continue to use, a variety of different models – including (Amazon AI model) Titan and future Amazon models, as well as those from partners – to build the best experience for customers,” the spokeswoman said.

Anthropic, in which Amazon owns a minority stake, declined to comment for this story.

AI Partnerships

Amazon has typically eschewed relying on technology it hasn’t developed in-house so it can ensure it has full control of the user experience, data collection and direct relationships with customers.

But it would not be alone in turning to a partner to improve AI products. Microsoft and Apple, for example, have both struck partnerships with OpenAI to use its ChatGPT to power some of their products.

The release of the Remarkable Alexa, as it is known internally, is expected in October, with a preview of the new service coming during Amazon’s annual devices and services event typically held in September, the people said.

Amazon has not yet said, however, when it plans to hold its showcase event, which will be the first major public appearance of its new devices chief, Panos Panay, who was hired last year to replace long-time executive David Limp.

The wide release in late 2022 of ChatGPT, which gives full-sentence answers almost instantaneously to complicated queries, set off a frenzy of investing and corporate maneuvering to develop better AI software for a variety of functions, including image, video and voice services.

By comparison, Amazon’s decade-old Alexa appeared outmoded, Amazon workers have told Reuters.

While Amazon has a mantra of “working backwards from the customer” to come up with new services, some of the people said that within the Alexa group, the emphasis since last year has instead been on keeping up with competitors in the AI race.

Amazon workers also have expressed skepticism that customers would be willing to pay $60 to $120 per year for a service that’s free today – on top of the $139 many already pay for their Prime memberships.

Alexa Upgrades

As envisioned, the paid version of Alexa would carry on conversations with a user that build on prior questions and answers, the people with knowledge of the Alexa strategy said.

The upgraded Alexa is designed to allow users to seek shopping advice such as which clothes to buy for a vacation and to aggregate news stories, the people said. And it is meant to carry out more complicated requests, such as ordering food or drafting emails all from a single prompt.

Amazon hopes the new Alexa will also be a supercharged home automation hub, remembering customer preferences so that, say, morning alarms are set, or the television knows to record favorite shows even when a user forgets to, they said.

The company’s plans for Alexa, however, could be delayed or altered if the technology fails to meet certain internal benchmarks, the people said, without giving further details.

Bank of America analyst Justin Post estimated in June that there are roughly 100 million active Alexa users and that about 10% of those might opt for the paid version of Alexa. Assuming the low end of the monthly price range, that would bring in at least $600 million in annual sales.

Amazon says it has sold 500 million Alexa-enabled devices but does not disclose how many active users there are.

Announcing a deal to invest $4 billion in Anthropic in September last year, Amazon said its customers would gain early access to its technology. Reuters could not determine if Amazon would have to pay Anthropic additionally for the use of Claude in Alexa.

Amazon declined to discuss the details of its agreements with the startup. Alphabet’s Google has also invested at least $2 billion in Anthropic.

The retailer, along with Google, is facing a formal probe from the UK’s antitrust regulator over the Anthropic deal and its impact on competition. It announced an initial investigation in August and said it has 40 working days to decide whether to move it to a more heightened stage of scrutiny.

The Washington Post earlier reported the October time frame for release of the new Alexa.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Review: Beauty with Some Brains

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Review: Beauty with Some Brains

[ad_1]

With its Galaxy Book series, Samsung has been steadily making tides in the premium laptop segment. The laptop is the epitome of the premium design language and state-of-the-art displays. This year, the company has refreshed its lineup with the launch of Galaxy Book4 Pro and Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 laptops in India. The latter is the one we are going to talk about today. The latest 2-in-1 laptop from Samsung brings tried and tested design language to the table. However, we now have the new generation of Ultra processors coupled with some interesting AI features. That said, for a hefty price tag of Rs 1,79,990, does it make sense to go for this thin and light ultrabook? Let’s find the answer in this in-depth review.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Design: Sleek and Sturdy

  • Dimension – 355.4 x 252.2 x 12.8 mm
  • Weight – 1.66kg
  • Colours – Moonstone Gray

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 offers a similar design language as we have seen in the previous generation Galaxy Book Pro 360 series. However, this is not necessarily bad as it is still one of the sleekest and lightest 2-in-1 available in the market with just 12.8mm thickness and 1.66kg weight.

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 5 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

The Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 features all-metal chassis.

Samsung has done an excellent job by introducing a luxe all-metal chassis that offers a sturdy yet premium look and feel. Although the laptop is quite slim, the large 16-inch display still requires a suitably sized bag for travelling. The company has also made the 360-hinge sturdy; you won’t get that wobbly feel when you open the lid.

The laptop is available in Moonstone Gray finish, which looks subtle, and the matte finish keeps the fingerprints and smudges at bay. Once you open the lid, you will be greeted with a full-size keyboard and a large trackpad. The right side of the device features a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, and a microSD card reader.

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 9 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro I/O ports.

The laptop’s left side features a 2x USB-C 4.0 with Thunderbolt and a HDMI 2.1 port. That said, the laptop’s look and feel surely make it a premium offering, and the brand has certainly done a good job of making a sturdy laptop.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Display: Crisp and Fluid

  • Display – 16.0-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X touchscreen
  • Resolution – 3K (2880 x 1800 pixels)
  • Refresh Rate – Up to 120Hz

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 fully utilises the AMOLED display technology to provide vibrant and crisp colours. The company has also given you the option to customise the display profile as you need, including Standard and Vivid. The latter one is recommended as it offers better colour saturation.

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 3 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 features a 3K AMOLED display that offers crisp visuals.

The display also comes loaded with a 120Hz refresh rate, making the whole experience fluid. While watching “Lost in Space” on Netflix, the blacks were deep, and the dynamic range was on point.

The 3K display offers a good brightness of 500nits, making it easier to use in outdoor lighting conditions. It also provides wide viewing angles, which is a good thing. Moreover, the anti-reflective coating also minimises the glare for a better viewing experience. The touch screen is also smooth and accurate, and you will enjoy it while using it in a tent mode.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Keyboard, Touchpad, Speakers, and Webcam: Some Hits and Misses

  • Keyboard – Full-size backlit keyboard
  • Webcam – 1080p Hi-res wide-angle camera
  • Speakers – Quad Speakers

The company is giving a full-size backlit keyboard with the latest laptop. The chiclet-styled keyboard delivers short key travel and some noticeable keystroke noise, which makes the typing experience somewhat better. However, the keyboard feels slightly cramped while typing, and you must go through a learning curve to get the hang of the keys.

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 7 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 features a full-size backlit keyboard.

The keyboard also features a dedicated power on/off that also acts as a fingerprint scanner right at the top-right corner. The Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 does not have a facial Windows Hello login feature, which is quite odd for a laptop in this price range. However, the fingerprint sensor is fast in most cases. However, I noticed that it stopped working randomly on different occasions, and you need to restart the laptop to make it function properly again.

Coming to the touchpad, it is probably one of the largest I have seen in a laptop. The trackpad is smooth and offers good response. You also get gesture-swiping controls that can be customised by going to Settings > Touchpad.

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 has a quad-speaker system, which delivers good sound output. The speaker delivers a decent level of depth, and they don’t distort at high volumes, which is a good thing. The webcam works well and supports Windows Studio Effects, which means you can use different features like auto framing, portrait blur, and more.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Software: Works Better if you have a Flagship Galaxy Phone

  • Operating System – Windows 11
  • Other Features – Copilot Plus

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 runs on Windows 11 operating system. The device also comes loaded with a Copilot AI tool with multiple use cases. I used Copilot to summarise the articles for easy reading. That said, the company also offers a plethora of applications.

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 6 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

The laptop is powered by the latest Intel Ultra Core processors.

One can open the Galaxy Experience app and go through different apps like Samsung Notes, Quick Search, Samsung Gallery, Live Wallpaper, Samsung Studio, and more. Moreover, if you have a Galaxy smartphone, then you can also use connectivity features like using your Galaxy phone as a camera for video calls, drag and drop files between phone and laptop, quick share, and more.

The company also ships a S-Pen with the device, which is quite responsive and offers a comfortable fit. The S-Pen also supports Air Commands, which allow you to access different features. The most usable ones are the Smart Select and Smart Write.

The former allows you to take a screenshot, while the latter helps you take notes on a screen grab. Both features are quite useful for the creators. You can also add shortcuts in the Air Command tab, which is a good thing.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Performance: Power-packed Performance

  • Chipset – Intel Core Ultra 7 Processor 155H
  • RAM – 16 GB LPDDR5X
  • ROM – 1TB NVMe SSD
  • GPU – Intel Arc Graphics

Coming to the performance, the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 offers lives up to the expectations. I got the Intel Core Ultra 7 unit, and boy; you will not face any problems with your daily work schedule. The laptop glides smoothly when multitasking between different applications. You can also check the benchmark scores below:

Benchmark Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360
Cinebench R23 Single Core 11752
Cinebench R23 Multi Core 10,961
Geekbench 6 Single Core 2,380
Geekbench 6 Multi Core 12571
PC Mark 10 6640
3DMark Night Raid 25,726
3DMark CPU Profile 7,234
CrystalDiskMark 3754.35 MB/s (Read)/ 2641.51 MB/s (Write)

Moreover, I didn’t face many issues with it during a heavy workload that included multiple Chrome tabs, YouTube music playing in the background, shuffling between Slack and Chrome, using Copilot for summarising articles, and more.

The Ultra SoC also supports some casual gaming, but that’s it. Don’t expect some excellent performance while running popular AAA titles. The thermal performance needs some improvement, though. During the testing, I found out that the laptop was getting warm with heavy usage.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Battery: Impressive

  • Battery Capacity – 76 Wh (Typical)
  • Fast Charging – 64W USB Type-C Adapter

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 offers an impressive battery life. With the balanced profile, I got close to seven hours of battery life with medium usage. With heavy usage, the battery lasted for at least five hours. The company also ships a compact 68W fast charger with the laptop, and it quickly charges the device from 5 percent to 100 percent in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 Verdict

samsung galaxy book4 pro 360 4 Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 offers a premium design and brings some interesting features to the table.

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro offers the right mix of premium design and flagship performance. The all-metal chassis gives it a sturdy yet premium look, while the slim form factor certainly works in favour. The performance is what you expect from a thin and light ultrabook at this price point. The display looks sharp and is surely one of the strong points of the device. The battery life is impressive, and so is the fast charging support.

However, the competition is quite tough in this price segment. The HP Spectre x360, Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, and Lenovo Yoga 7i 2-in-1 offer similar specifications and performance. So, if you are into a thin and light 2-in-1 laptop and also an existing Samsung mobile user, then the Galaxy Book4 Pro 360 will complete your ecosystem.

Honor 200 Pro First Impressions

0
Honor 200 Pro First Impressions

[ad_1]

Honor has finally expanded its portfolio with the launch of the Honor 200 series in India. The brand has introduced two models in this series, the Honor 200 and Honor 200 Pro. While the former caters to the mid-premium segment, the latter is currently under the limelight with a hefty price tag of Rs 57,999 for the sole variant with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, which basically puts it in the league of the premium segment. The newest model from the brand brings premium-grade design, specifications, and AI features.

The Honor 200 Pro offers pro-grade cameras, a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC, a stainless steel vapour chamber, AI features, and more. However, the competition is quite tricky here as we have the OnePlus 12, iQoo 12, or even the recently launched Xiaomi 14 Civi that offers a similar chipset at a much lower price. But can it beat the odds and become people’s favourite? Although that will be revealed during our in-depth review, here are some things you need to know in our first impressions.

1 Honor 200 Pro

The Honor 200 Pro is available in two colour options: Black and Ocean Cyan

Honor is known for making gorgeous-looking smartphones, and the Honor 200 Pro certainly meets expectations. When you remove the phone from the box (that sadly comes without a charger), you will be greeted with a huge pill-shaped camera module that makes it stand out from the crowd.

The phone is available in two colourways: Black and Ocean Cyan. We got the latter for review, and boy; it gives away a feel of ocean waves hitting the beach with its dual-tone design. Interestingly, the finish also comes with a velvety texture that makes it quite comfortable to hold in your hand (but in the end, the beauty will be tamed by a case!).

3 Honor 200 Pro

The Honor 200 Pro features a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The front panel offers a quad-curved display with minimal bezels around the corner. The edges are refined so it does not feel that pokey (a common problem with curved display phones). Overall, the in-hand experience is surely a premium one, and if you prefer a minimal design, you can also consider the Black colour option.

Moving on, the display on the Honor 200 Pro seems to be one of the best in the segment. You get a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with 2700 x 1224 pixels resolution. The display looks vibrant and bright, all thanks to the 4,000nits of peak brightness and ultra-dynamic colour display technology.

It also supports DCI-P3 cinematic wide colour gamut along with DXO Mark Gold certificate, meaning it has some potential. During the initial testing, the display turned out to be crisp and offered deep levels of black. We will be covering this more during our review.

4 Honor 200 Pro

The smartphone is loaded with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor.

The performance is where the Honor 200 Pro tries to make a mark. The handset is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor. Mind you, the same chipset is available in the Xioami 14 Civi, and it costs quite less than this one.

The company has added some useful features to enhance gaming performance. It features a 36,881mm stainless steel vapour chamber along with an AI-driven virtual dedicated GPU engine to make the gameplay a smoother experience.

Talking about AI, the phone comes loaded with some interesting AI features. The handset runs on Android 14-based MagicOS 8.0 with several on-device AI features. First, you have Magic Portal, which allows you to seamlessly drag content to different apps. Then, you have some AI-powered Portrait Mode effects on the cameras that enhance the overall photos and videos.

6 Honor 200 Pro

The Honor 200 Pro features a 50-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Honor 200 Pro offers some pro-grade cameras as well. The handset comes loaded with a triple-camera setup on the rear with a combination of a 50-megapixel primary sensor with OIS + EIS support, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor that also doubles as a macro camera.

On the front, the handset equips a 50-megapixel shooter for selfies and video calling. The phone takes some amazing photos in daylight conditions, and the portraits are quite interesting—more on this in our upcoming in-depth review.

The phone also features a 5,200mAh battery and 100W SuperCharge fast charging support. The phone also supports 66W wireless fast charging, though sadly, the company does not bundle the charger with the box.

5 Honor 200 Pro

The handset is loaded with a 5,200mAh battery with 100W fast charging support.

The Honor 200 Pro sure seems to be an exciting smartphone, as it has all the features for a flagship device. However, the competition is quite challenging in this price segment. We have OnePlus 12, Google Pixel 8A, iQoo 12, and more that offer flagship-grade specifications and have dominated the segment.

So, the question here is: can it beat the competition? Stay tuned for an in-depth review of the Honor 200 Pro, where we try to answer this question.

It is said to be the first phone to be equipped with Oppo’s Crystal Shield glass and has a 7.15mm thick profile.

Moto Tag Bluetooth Tracker With UWB Connectivity, Find My Device Network Support Launched

Moto Tag Bluetooth Tracker With UWB Connectivity, Find My Device Network Support Launched

[ad_1]

Moto Tag was launched on Tuesday as a Bluetooth tracker for Android devices with an ultra-wideband (UWB) chip. Location trackers have been around for years, enabling people to locate lost or stolen items through their smartphones and other devices. While Tile and Apple are one of the biggest names in this market, the latter’s AirTag is only compatible with Apple devices. On Android, Tile offers multiple location-tracking solutions, which Motorola’s new Moto Tag is set to compete with.

Moto Tag price

Moto Tag is priced at $29 (roughly Rs. 2,423) while a pack of four will be available for $99 (roughly Rs. 8,273) in the US starting on August 2, according to The Verge. The company is yet to update its website with the price of the tracker, and it is currently unclear whether it will be introduced in other markets, including India.

Moto Tag specifications, features

The newly announced Moto Tag offers support for Google’s Find My Device network, which was recently launched by the search giant. Motorola claims that the tracker will provide precise location-tracking capabilities when paired with a UWB-supported smartphone such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the Google Pixel 8.

The device also features a dedicated multi-function button, which Motorola says can ping the smartphone to locate it. Furthermore, it can also be used as a remote capture button when taking photos on any Android smartphone. It also supports Google Fast Pair to simplify the setup process. With the standalone Moto Tag app, users can also change the name of the tag, adjust the alert volume, and check battery life.

The company says its Bluetooth tracker protects the user’s privacy by offering end-to-end encryption of their location. This means only the owner of the Moto Tag as well as those its location is shared with, can locate it.

Motorola says the device supports automatic unknown tracker alerts on both Android and iOS platforms, meaning users will be alerted if an unknown party attempts to track their location. Additionally, they can also run a manual scan to check for unwanted trackers following them.

Moto Tag is claimed to be compatible with third-party accessories and can be attached to valuables. For durability, it is IP67-rated, allowing it to withstand immersion in water for up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. It is equipped with a CR2032 battery which is said to last a year on a single charge.

OnePlus Ace 3 Pro Tipped to Get a Significantly Larger Battery Than Its Predecessor

[ad_1]

OnePlus usually launches Ace Pro series phones exclusively in China and the company is expected to announce its OnePlus Ace 3 Pro soon as an upgrade over the OnePlus Ace 2 Pro. The next Ace series phone is yet to get an official release date, but ahead of it, a Chinese tipster has leaked its battery and charging capabilities. The OnePlus Ace 3 Pro is tipped to be armed by a massive battery. It is expected to run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

OnePlus Ace 3 Pro may have a bigger battery

Tipster Digitial Chat Station on Weibo posted that the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will be equipped with a 6,100mAh battery and 100W fast charging support. The battery capacity would be massive if true and will mark a 1,100mAh bump from the OnePlus Ace 2 Pro’s 5,000mAh battery unit.

Previously, the tipster claimed that the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro would have a dual-cell battery setup, with each cell having a capacity of 2,970mAh and a combined value of 5,940mAh. The total value could be 6,100mAh.

OnePlus Ace 3 Pro specifications (rumoured)

The OnePlus Ace 3 Pro is expected to come with a curved edge screen with a centrally located hole punch cutout for the selfie shooter. It is said to get a 6.78-inch 1.5K resolution 8T LTPO screen and is rumoured to run on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The handset is tipped to feature a metal middle frame and a glass body.

OnePlus could include a triple rear camera setup on the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro, comprising a 50-megapixel primary sensor, accompanied by 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel sensors. It is tipped to pack a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

The OnePlus Ace 3 Pro is expected to launch in the third quarter of this year. It will come with upgrades over the OnePlus Ace 2 Pro that debuted in August last year in China with a price tag of CNY 2,999 (roughly Rs. 34,600) for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
