Google Maps ‘Immersive View’, Android 13 Beta 2, and Everything Else Announced at Google I/O 2022

[ad_1]

Google Maps is getting an all-new experience called ‘immersive view’, to deliver an enhanced digital model of buildings and streets around the world. The new mode uses advances in computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver a rich viewing experience to users, Google said while announcing the new feature at its I/O 2022 consumer keynote on Wednesday. Google also announced the second beta of Android 13, its upcoming operating system. The company also announced updates coming to Google Workspace including automated transcriptions, portrait light, and portrait restore on Google Meet. Additionally, there were announcements related to Google Assistant, YouTube, skin tone representation, and others that you will find in detail here.

Google Maps updates

With the ‘immersive view’, Google Maps help provide the rich view of a neighborhood, landmark, restaurant, or a popular venue you search. It fuses together billions of Street View and aerial images alongside advances in computer vision and AI to provide the rich, digital model of virtual maps, the company said.

“Whether you’re traveling somewhere new or scoping out hidden local gems, immersive view will help you make the most informed decisions before you go,” Google said.

In addition to the immersive experience, the new view includes the time slider that users can use to even check out what the area looks like at different times of day and in various weather conditions. Users can also glide down to street level to look at nearby restaurants and see information such as live busyness and nearby traffic.

‘Immersive view’ uses Google Cloud to offer the digital view to users. So, it is device agnostic and can work with any phone and device, Google said. The experience has initially started rolling out in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo.

Google Maps is also expanding eco-friendly routing to more places including Europe. It was launched in the US and Canada in the recent past and has been used by people to travel 86 billion miles, saving over an estimated half a million metric tons of carbon emissions, Google claimed.

Further, Google is making its Live View available to developers through the new ARCore Geospatial API. It brings augmented reality (AR) to display arrows and directions on top of real-world viewing to help users navigate indoor areas such as airports, malls, and train stations.

Android 13 beta 2 release

Among other announcements, Google at the I/O 2022 consumer keynote announced the release of Android 13 beta 2. The update will carry a list of improvements and enhancements over the first beta release that debuted for select Pixel devices last month. Google also announced features including a unified Security & Privacy settings page, new media control featuring album’s artwork, and a new photo picture that lets users to select the exact photos and videos that they want to grant access to. Android 13 will also include optimisations for tablets, including better multitasking capabilities and features including an updated taskbar with the ability to switch the single tablet view into a split screen.

Google Meet updates

Google Meet is getting the portrait restore that uses Google AI to help improve video quality and add enhancements even if a user is sitting in a dimly lit room and using an old webcam or have a poor Wi-Fi connectivity. Google said that the feature can help enhance video automatically.

In addition to the portrait restore feature, Google Meet is getting portrait light that is claimed to use machine learning to simulate studio-quality lighting in video feed. Users can also adjust the lighting position and brightness.

Google Meet is also getting de-reverberation that helps filter out echos in spaces with hard surfaces using machine learning. The company claims that the feature helps you sound “like you’re in a mic-ed up conference room…even if you’re in your basement.”

Additionally, Google Meet is getting live sharing to sync content being shared in a virtual call and allow participants to control the media. Developers can also use live sharing APIs to integrate Meet into their apps.

Google is also bringing automated transcription later this year and meeting summarisation next year to enhance conversations on Google Meet.

Google Workspace is getting Google Meet’s automated transcriptions to help users transcribe conversations directly in their documents. Google is also extending auto-summaries to Spaces to provide a digest of long conversations. Auto-summaries were introduced on Google Docs earlier this year.

Further, Google is adding security protections that were a part of Gmail to Google Slides, Docs, and Sheets. The company claimed that these protections will help users prevent from opening documents containing phishing links and malware using automatic alerts.

At the I/O 2022 consumer keynote, Google announced Look and Talk that is rolling out to in the US on Nest Hub Max to help people access Google Assistant without saying the “OK Google” or “Hey Google” hotword. Users will just need to look at the screen and then ask for what they need. The feature uses Face Match and Voice Match features based on machine learning and AI algorithms to recognise users and quickly enable voice interactions. Google said that the feature will be available as an opt-in offering.

Once enabled, you can use Look and Talk to interact with Google Assistant by just looking at the screen of your Nest Hub Max.

“Video from these interactions is processed entirely on-device, so it isn’t shared with Google or anyone else,” the company said.

Google also noted that the feature work across a range of skin tones and for people with diverse backgrounds.

In addition to the Look and Talk feature, Google is expanding quick phrases to Nest Hub Max to let users skip saying “Hey Google” for their most common daily tasks. This means that you will be able to turn on the lights in your room by saying, “Turn on the living room lights,” without saying the hotword first.

Google Assistant is also getting new speech and language models that can help understand the nuances of human speech — like when someone is pausing, but not finished speaking, the company said.

YouTube updates

Google at the I/O keynote announced that it is bringing auto-translated captions on YouTube to mobile users to help users view video captions in as many as 16 languages. Google is also bringing auto-translated captions to all Ukrainian YouTube content next month.

Skin tone updates

Google is releasing a new skin tone scale called the Monk Skin Tone (MST) Scale based on the research conducted by Harvard professor and sociologist Dr. Ellis Monk. This will help bring more inclusive of the spectrum of skin tones, the company said.

The new 10-shade skin tone scale will be integrated within various Google products over the coming months. Google is also releasing the scale openly to allow others in the tech industry to incorporate a vast range of skin tones into their experiences.

One of the key Google products that will start using the MST Scale will be Google Search. It will start showing users an option to help users further refine results by skin tone. Creators, brands and publishers will also be able to use an inclusive schema to label their content with attributes like skin tone, hair colour and hair texture.

Google Photos will also use the MST Scale to allow users to enhance their photos using a new set of Real Tone filters. These filters will be rolling out on Google Photos across Android, iOS, and the Web in the coming weeks.

Samsung AI EcoBubble Fully Automatic Washing Machine Range Launched in India, Starting at Rs. 41,600

[ad_1]

Consumer electronics major Samsung on Tuesday launched its range of artificial intelligence-enabled bilingual AI EcoBubble fully automatic front load washing machines in India.

The 2022 lineup of 40 models come with intelligent features such as AI wash, air wash technology and super speed cycle, Samsung said in a statement.

“AI EcoBubble is India’s first washing machine that learns user behaviour and suggests the most preferred wash cycle, providing ease of use by eliminating the need to juggle through multiple options,” said Samsung.

This smart Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled washing machine line up can be connected with Samsung smart devices such as Galaxy smartphones, Samsung smart TVs and family hub refrigerators as well as voice devices such as Alexa and Google Home, it added.

“When connected with the Samsung SmartThings App, AI EcoBubble washing machines provide best wash options basis 2.8 million big data points,” it said.

Its AI wash uses sensors to sense the laundry’s weight and level of soiling and optimises the amount of water, detergent and rinsing time, using machine learning, it added. While its air wash technology deodorises and sanities clothes without washing them with water.

On the other hand, super speed cycle reduces laundry time drastically by shortening the rinsing time using speed spray and accelerating spin speed to quickly spin-dry clothes.

Starting from Rs. 41,600, the new lineup of washing machines will be available across all retail partners in India along with Samsung’s official online store Samsung Shops and channel partners Amazon and Flipkart.

Samsung India Senior vice president, Consumer Electronics Business, Mohandeep Singh said: “Our new AI-enabled bilingual washing machine line up is a breakthrough innovation that leverages the advances in machine learning to offer simple, intelligent and personalised laundry solutions to consumers. We are confident that the new range will further enhance consumer lifestyles and will witness strong adoption across the country.” Last month, rival South Korean firm LG Electronics had introduced a new line up consisting of smart appliances with AI technology. It had also introduced AI Direct Drive washing machines.

Google I/O 2022 Starts Today: How to Watch, What to Expect

Google I/O 2022 Starts Today: How to Watch, What to Expect

[ad_1]

Google I/O 2022 is kicking off today, and just like the past years, you can watch its livestream. The Google I/O 2022 keynote featuring Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and his core team, is expected to bring the key announcements, such as the launch of new hardware including an affordable Pixel phone as well as advancements and improvements coming to Android and Wear OS. Shortly after the main keynote, Google will hold a developer-focussed keynote where we are expected to see some detailed information about the company’s prime software updates.

How to watch Google I/O 2022 livestream in India and around the world

Google I/O 2022 will take place as a two-day event, starting with the keynote that will begin at 1pm ET (10:30pm IST) today. The developer-centric event will be held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. However, Google will livestream the conference for its worldwide audience. The event — including the main keynote — will be livestreamed through Google’s social media channels. While the keynote will be livestreamed for all, developers who want to virtually attend specific sessions and the developer-focussed keynote following the main keynote need to register on the Google I/O site.

You can watch the Google I/O 2022 keynote live from the video embedded below.

What all to expect at Google I/O 2022

Just like past years, this year’s Google I/O conference will detail the company’s latest developments towards its operating systems including Android and Wear OS. The rumour mill has also suggested that we could see some hardware-focussed announcements at the event.

Android 13
At Google I/O 2022, we can expect Google to explain its new advancements and improvements in Android 13. The operating system, which is the successor to last year’s Android 12, received its first developer preview in February. It is likely to get an Apple-like spatial audio feature for Pixel 6 models as well as two carrier connections on a single eSIM, per previous reports.

Wear OS
In addition to Android 13, Wear OS is likely to get an update with a list of enhancements and improvements that we can expect at this year’s Google I/O. Google last year announced its partnership with Samsung for integrating Tizen within Wear OS. We could see some new moves at that end.

Pixel 6a
At this year’s I/O keynote, Google is expected to repeat its 2019 take and unveil the Pixel 6a as its new affordable smartphone. The phone is speculated to have Google’s Tensor chip — similar to the existing Pixel 6 models. It is also expected to have the Pixel 6-like back design, a retail box surfaced online has suggested. The new Pixel phone may, however, lack some of the features that were exclusive to the Pixel 6 series. Normally, Google uses its I/O conferences to detail software and Web technologies, though it did make a change in 2019 when it announced the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL as its two affordable smartphones.

Pixel Watch
Alongside the Pixel 6a, the Pixel Watch is expected to debut at Google I/O 2022 keynote later today. The rumour mill has suggested that Google is working on its own smartwatch hardware for some time. It is speculated to have a circular design and run the latest Wear OS version. It could also come with a Fitbit integration for enhanced fitness tracking support.

Pixel Buds Pro
Google is tipped to launch the Pixel Buds Pro alongside the Pixel 6a and Pixel Watch at this year’s I/O keynote. The new truly wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds by the Android maker are said to be available in Carbon, Fog, Limoncello, and Real Red colours.

Google Assistant improvements
This year’s Google I/O is also expected to bring some new improvements to Google Assistant — to make it a better option against Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. There could also be some enhancements specifically to uplift your smart home experience.

Google Search advancements
At the I/O 2022 keynote, Google is expected to announce some of its tweaks to improve search results. These changes are expected to leverage the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning advancements.

Other updates
If we go by the historical records, Google is likely to announce updates to Google Maps, Photos, and Gmail at this year’s I/O conference. We may also see the company bringing back its Wallet app to complement Google Pay. Furthermore, there could be some special announcements around Google’s plans to work on Web 3 and develop next-generation apps and experiences for metaverse.

How Amazon Alexa Continues to Learn About India

How Amazon Alexa Continues to Learn About India

[ad_1]

Amazon Alexa has been in India for over four years now. The voice assistant, which initially debuted on Amazon Echo speakers, is currently available across a range of third-party devices including smart TVs, smartphones, and wearables such as smartwatches, as well as truly wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds and headphones. And of course, there are Amazon’s own Echo devices. Although Alexa kicked off its journey in India only in English, it has gradually started understanding Hindi and Hinglish — a blend of Hindi and English — that is popular across the country.

On this week’s episode of Gadgets 360 podcast Orbital, host Akhil Arora speaks with Dilip RS, the Country Manager for Alexa Skills and Voice Services at Amazon India, to understand the journey of Alexa in the country. The conversation is joined by Gadgets 360 audio expert Ali Pardiwala, who has reviewed a number of Alexa-integrated devices.

Amazon formally introduced Alexa to India through the first family of Echo speakers back in October 2017. The Echo range was initially invite-only, and made available to all customers in February 2018. However, shortly after the initial Echo series, the voice assistant expanded in the country through third-party devices including speakers from Logitech and Harman Kardon and a Moto Mod for Motorola phones.

Before the formal debut of Alexa in India, scores of early adopters in the country — including our host — were testing out the experience by getting Echo speakers from outside the country. But the official launch helped Amazon to get a vast range of datasets to polish localisation. Dilip tells us that Alexa now understands both Hindi and English words, as well as a multilingual mode in which you can interact with the voice assistant in both languages simultaneously.

“People who speak to Alexa in Hindi, they actually have a 50 percent higher range of questions,” he notes.

In 2018, Amazon introduced a skill called Cleo that helped Alexa learn Hindi and other Indian languages directly from users. The engineering team at Amazon later built a bilingual Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system that enabled Alexa to understand Hindi and English words at the same time. The system also includes slots to incorporate content from multiple Indian languages in Telugu, Tamil, and Marathi, Dilip tells us in the conversation.

“Alexa has to truly understand what the customer is intending in which language and even respond back in that,” he adds.

Dilip also reveals that over the last four years, Echo devices have expanded their reach to almost 85 percent of pin codes in the country. These are no longer limited to some metros, but available in cities such as Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and Bundi, Rajasthan.

In addition to its regular consumers, Amazon is seeing government school teachers in India using Alexa-powered Echo or third-party devices in their classrooms to have their students interact more freely and improve their diction. Dilip says: “The kids are asking questions that they’re not comfortable asking their teachers. Their attendance rates went up in school.”

We also talk about the privacy side of things and how Alexa works even in areas where Internet connectivity is not at par with metro cities. You can listen to all this and more by hitting the play button on the Spotify player embedded above.

In case you are new to our site, you can find the Gadgets 360 podcast Orbital on your favourite platform — be it Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Gaana, JioSaavn, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Don’t forget to follow the Gadgets 360 podcast wherever you’re listening. Please also rate us and leave a review.

New Orbital episodes release every Friday. Make sure to tune in each week.

Routers, Network Cameras From Netgear, Linksys, and Others Affected Due to DNS Poisoning Flaw

[ad_1]

Routers and connected devices including network cameras from companies including Netgear, Linksys, and Axis as well as the ones using Linux distributions such as Embedded Gentoo are found to be affected by a domain name system (DNS) poisoning flaw that exists in two popular libraries used for connected devices. Exact models impacted by the vulnerability are not revealed by the researchers who have discovered its existence since the loophole is yet to be patched. However, the vulnerable libraries have been used by a large number of vendors, including some of the renowned router and Internet of Things (IoT) device makers.

The researchers at IT security firm Nozomi Networks said that the DNS implementation of all versions of libraries uClibc and uClibc-ng carried the DNS poisoning flaw that an attacker can exploit to redirect users to malicious servers and steal the information shared through the affected devices. The issue was first discovered last year and was disclosed to over 200 vendors in January.

While uClibc has been used by vendors including Netgear, Linksys, and Axis and is a part of Linux distributions such as Embedded Gentoo, uClibc-ng is a fork that is design for OpenWRT — the popular open-source operating system for routers. This shows the extensive scope of the flaw that could impact a large number of users around the world.

The vulnerability in both libraries enables attackers to predict a parameter called transaction ID that is normally a unique number per request generated by the client to protect communication through DNS.

In a normal situation, if the transaction ID is not available or is different from what has been generated at the client side, the system discards the response. However, since the vulnerability brings predictability of the transaction ID, an attacker can predict the number to eventually spoof the legitimate DNS and redirect requests towards a fake Web server or a phishing website.

The researchers also noted that DNS poisoning attacks also enable attackers to initiate subsequent Man-in-the-Middle attacks that could help them steal or manipulate information transmitted by users or even compromise the devices carrying the vulnerable libraries.

“Because this vulnerability remains unpatched, for the safety of the community we cannot disclose the specific devices we tested on. We can, however, disclose that they were a range of well-known IoT devices running the latest firmware versions with a high chance of them being deployed throughout all critical infrastructure,” said Andrea Palanca, a security researcher at Nozomi Networks.

The maintainer of uClibc-ng wrote in an open forum that they were not able to fix the issue at their end. Similarly, uClibc has not received an update since 2010, as per the details available on the downloads page of the library, as noticed by Ars Technica.

However, device vendors are currently working on evaluating the issue and its impact.

Netgear issued a statement to acknowledge the impact of the vulnerability on its devices.

“Netgear is aware of the disclosure of an industry-wide security vulnerability in the uClibc and uClibc-ng embedded C libraries affecting some products. Netgear is assessing which products are affected. All Netgear products use source port randomisation and we are not currently aware of any specific exploit that could be used against the affected products,” the company said.

It also assured that it would continue to investigate the issue, and, if a fix would become available in the future, would evaluate whether the fix is applicable for the affected Netgear products.

Gadgets 360 has also reached out to vendors including Linksys and Axis to get their comments on the flaw and will update this article when they respond.
