SHANGHAI: Huawei Technologies paid out dividends totalling 61.404 billion yuan ($9.65 billion) to current and retired workers in its employee shareholder scheme, according to a filing with the Shanghai Clearing House.

Some 131,507 current and former workers are involved in the shareholder scheme, according to the company’s 2021 annual report released last week. The company is private and wholly owned by its employees, it said.

The filing, published on Saturday, does not break down the dividend distribution.

It comes as U.S. sanctions continue to weigh heavily on Huawei‘s business, with full-year revenue tumbling 29% last year to 636.8 billion yuan.

Net profit jumped by a record 76% to 113.7 billion yuan, but that was mainly due to the sale of its budget-brand smartphone unit Honor and server businesses under U.S. pressure.

The United States imposed a series of trade restrictions on Huawei throughout 2019 and 2020, citing national security concerns, which Huawei denies.

The restrictions impeded Huawei’s ability to design its own chips and to source components from outside vendors, crippling its smartphone businesses.

Guo Ping, Huawei’s current rotating chairman, said last week that the company still hopes to find a solution to sustain its smartphone division and will ramp up investment in research seeking microchip “breakthroughs” after losing access to certain advanced technologies because of U.S. sanctions.

Logitech MX Keys Mini Review: Compact, Versatile and Seamless

Logitech’s MX Keys keyboard is a solid offering, aimed primarily at creators as it lets you connect multiple devices to the same keyboard and even copy files across them. The newly launched MX Keys Mini brings all of those features in a compact form factor so that it’s small enough to fit in a backpack. Logitech’s MX Keys Mini also gets some new features that the older MX Keys doesn’t have, making it more appealing to younger audiences. While it is a unique device, it might be a bit overpriced for some, andit’s not perfect, as I discovered after using it for a few weeks.

I received two units of the Logitech MX Keys Mini for review. The Rose finish is a light shade of pink and in my opinion, looks less flashy than the image on Logitech’s website, which is a good thing. The Graphite version looks just like the regular MX Keys keyboard, with a grey body and black keys. This Bluetooth keyboard is also available in Pale Gray (which has a silver body with white keys). The box includes the keyboard, a USB Type-A to Type-C cable for charging, and user documentation. At a sticker price of Rs. 12,995, I would have liked Logitech to have provided a sturdy, hard carrying case with it.

The Logitech MX Keys Mini keyboard looks similar to the older MX Keys keyboard, except for its smaller size and lower weight of 504g. It’s solid enough to stay in place while typing. Logitech also claims that parts of the MX Keys Mini are made using environmentally friendly material such as post-consumer recycled plastic, which is not the case with the regular MX Keys.

There are proximity sensors in the keyboard so the keys light up when your fingers approach them

 

The keycaps on the MX Keys Mini are concave, just like the regular MX Keys, which makes them comfortable to type on. The depression in each keycap makes the larger keys easier to identify. There are proximity sensors so the keys light up when your fingers approach them, which is a nice touch and helps prolong battery life.

Key labels should ideally be legible in all types of lighting conditions, but the backlight interfered with this, in my experience. When using the MX Keys Mini with more than 100 lux of lighting, such as outdoors in the daytime, the backlight brightness is supposed to adjust itself. However, it only turned off a few times during the entire review period in such conditions. While it’s clear that the system works, it just does not react quickly enough or in a timely manner, which means that the backlight stays on most of the time that your fingers are on the keyboard. Thankfully, there are manual controls, and I could adjust the brightness manually, with seven steps available.

I work during the day and have a window near my desk, so, a decent amount of ambient light hits my work table. This turned out to be a problem for the keyboard’s sensors, and the backlight never turned off. It was not an issue with the Graphite version (which has black keys) but the greyish labels were hard to read on the pink keycaps due to low contrast. What made things worse was that the keyboard did not remember my previous brightness setting; it defaulted to medium every time I switched it on. Using the Rose version of the MX Keys Mini became annoying, as I had to go through a ritual of manually turning down the brightness every time I switched it on, just to be able to see the letters on the keycaps during the day.

The scissor switches that the Logitech MX Keys Mini use are the same as on the larger MX Keys Bluetooth keyboard. The keys have good travel and produce a satisfying clicking sound when pressed, which isn’t too loud or distracting while typing. Very little force is needed to register key presses, no matter which part of the key you hit. The top of the keyboard’s frame is made of metal, while the bottom is plastic. There’s no flex when you press down on the keys.

The compact form factor means that navigation keys, (Page Up, Page Down), editing keys, and a numeric keypad are missing. However, there are three new function keys, which came in handy. The Dictation key enables ‘talk-to-text’ in any selected text field. Having paired this keyboard with a MacBook Pro, things seemed to work seamlessly after setting the necessary permissions, and this was useful when I felt too lazy to type. The Emoji key offered a quick way to select emoji using the directional keys.

The third new key is a Mute key, which mutes and unmutes your system’s mic. The Screenshot key is a handy one-button solution, especially on Mac, as capturing a screenshot typically needs a three-button combination. The keyboard lets you switch between three devices by pressing the F1, F2 or F3 keys. The Easy Switch feature worked seamlessly between my MacBook Pro, a Windows laptop, and an iPhone. Longtime Logitech users will be familiar with Flow and this feature also makes it to the MX Keys Mini. It basically lets you copy and paste files between devices (Windows and macOS), provided you have the Logi Options app installed on each of them.

Since I own a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse, I already had the Logi Options app installed on my system. Setup was quick and easy using the Bluetooth pairing process via the Settings app on macOS. Indeed, there are a lot of customisation options available. You can assign an app to the F4-F12, Ins, and Del keys so it can be launched with a single press. However, you do lose the preassigned functionality of that particular key.

You can also bind different apps to open when you’re already running a particular program. For instance, you can program the F4 key in such a way that it opens the calculator app if you’re using Microsoft Excel and Twitter when you’re in Safari. Key combinations or macros cannot be assigned though, which would have been ideal for creators. There is also a battery status indicator in the app’s main menu but I would have preferred to know the exact percentage remaining instead of just having three notches to show the rough level.

The Logitech MX Keys Mini can be charged via the USB Type-C port, but it takes a long time to charge when it’s completely drained. It took me about three hours to charge the keyboard using a 30W smartphone charger. Thankfully, the keyboard is functional when it’s charging. As for battery life, this mainly depends on how much you use the backlight. I managed over ten days on a single charge with the backlight on (8–10 hrs of use per day), and Logitech claims that the MX Keys Mini can last up to five months on one charge with the backlight switched off.

Verdict

The Logitech MX Keys Mini is a unique piece of kit. It is expensive, given that there are numerous Bluetooth keyboard options available online, from Logitech and other established brands. The three new keys on the MX Keys Mini are useful but they aren’t necessary.

The keyboard’s device-switching feature works well if you constantly need to use multiple devices side by side. The Flow feature makes a lot of sense for creators who often find themselves juggling between multiple systems on different platforms. Simply pressing Command + C to copy and Control + V to paste between macOS and Windows machines can be life-changing.

For most users, the MX Keys Mini will seem overpriced. There are enough options from Logitech that offer the basic functionality of a Bluetooth keyboard with the Easy Switch capability at much lower prices. The MX Keys Mini is mainly for those who need a compact travel keyboard that can be used across OS platforms, and those who would like a high level of customisation.

Android Malware Linked to Russian Attackers Discovered, Can Record Audio and Track Your Location

A new Android malware has been detected and detailed by a team of security researchers that records audio and tracks location once planted in the device. The malware uses the same shared-hosting infrastructure that was previously found to be used by a team of Russian hackers known as Turla. However, it is unclear whether the Russian state-supported group has a direct relation with the newly discovered malware. It reaches through a malicious APK file that works as an Android spyware and performs actions in the background, without giving any clear references to users.

Researchers at threat intelligence firm Lab52 have identified the Android malware that is named Process Manager. Once installed, it appeared on the device’s app drawer as a gear-shaped icon — disguised as a preloaded system service.

The researchers found that the app asks for a total of 18 permission when run for the first time on the device. These permissions include access to the phone location, Wi-Fi information, take pictures and videos from the inbuilt camera sensors, and voice recorder to record audio.

It is not clear whether the app receives permissions by abusing the Android Accessibility service or by tricking users to grant their access.

However, after the malicious app runs for the first time, its icon is removed from the app drawer. The app, though, still runs in the background, with its active status available in the notification bar.

The researchers noticed that the app configures the device on the basis of the permissions it receives to start executing a list of tasks. These include the details about the phone on which it has been installed as well as the ability to record audio and collect information including Wi-Fi settings and contacts.

Particularly on the audio recording part, the researchers discovered that the app records audio from the device and extracts it in the MP3 format in the cache directory.

The malware collects all the data and sends it in JSON format to a server that is located in Russia.

Although the exact source from which the malware reaches the devices is unknown, the researchers found that its creators have abused the referral system of an app called Roz Dhan: Earn Wallet Cash that is available for download on Google Play and has over 10 million downloads. The malware is said to download the legitimate app that eventually helps attackers install it on the device and makes profit out of its referral system.

It seems relatively uncommon for spyware since the attackers seem to be focused on cyber espionage. As Bleeping Computer notes, the strange behaviour of downloading an app to earn commissions from its referral system suggests that malware could be a part of a larger system that is yet to be discovered.

That said, Android users are recommended to avoid installing any unknown or suspicious apps on their devices. Users should also review the app permissions they grant to limit access of third parties to their hardware.

NEW DELHI: There is no stopping the rally in Tejas Networks. The stock hit the upper circuit for the fourth consecutive session on Monday, thanks to its plan to make the most of the upcoming 5G businesses in the country.

The Tata Group-owned stock climbed 5 per cent during the trade on Monday, closing in on the 52-week high levels it hit in October last year. The counter traded at Rs 468.40 on BSE.

The trigger for such a rally in the stock is its announcement of the acquisition of Saankhya Labs, a Bengaluru based company, which is involved in 5G technologies and chip design. Tejas plans to eventually merge the firm with itself.

Tejas, which is also part of Vijay Kedia‘s portfolio, said the acquisition will enhance the company’s Wireless offerings by adding 5G ORAN, 5G Cellular Broadcast and Satellite communication products to its product portfolio. It will also add to its customer base in India and international markets.

Saankhya has 73 International patents to its name of which 41 are already approved. With customers in the US, Europe, Asia and India, and strong domain expertise in all aspects of wireless communications and chip design, Tejas believes it will be value accretive for it.

“Tejas has a vision to become a top global telecom product company over the next few years. Immediate focus is to accelerate R&D investments to create a larger portfolio of products. Acquisition of Saankhya will bring in a strong domain expertise and IPR in wireless communication (5G, Broadcast, Satellite) as well as semiconductor design,” said the management of Tejas in a recent investor presentation.

“Saankhya will be complementary in terms of product/technology areas and customer access. Tejas, as a larger platform, will derive synergies in R&D, Sales and SCM/Operations,” it said, adding that we continue to have a strong balance sheet to invest and accelerate our growth.

Interestingly, there is no analyst coverage on the counter. In the last one year, it has rallied 182 per cent, meaning nearly three-fold growth.

Polycab bags Rs 509-crore Tanfinet initiative, to execute by March 2023NEW DELHI: Polycab India Limited, a Gujarat-based optic fibre maker, has bagged BharatNet initiative by Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation Limited (Tanfinet), under Package – A at a cost of Rs 509-crore, to deploy 16,500 kilometres of fibre network within a year’s time frame.

“We have been given the all-important responsibility of a Master System Integrator (MSI) by the Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation, to implement the BharatNet Phase-II project in nine districts under Package A in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs. 509 crore, under the master service agreement,” Ashish D Jain , Executive President & COO, Telecom Business at Polycab India told ETTelecom.

Earlier, the company has completed BharatNet-II programs in Bihar and Gujarat in a record time as a consortium player.

“We have asked to provide end-to-end connectivity with high-speed bandwidth using optical fibre cable in 3,095 gram panchayats (village blocks) across 9 districts of the state under Package A,” Jain said, adding that of the 16,500 kilometres of cable laying, 85% of it, would involve overhead or aerial deployment.

Under the Tamil Nadu initiative, Polycab’s scope of work would involve site survey, design, fiber laying, integration and commissioning as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) to enable gram panchayats in the demarcated districts with a minimum scalable bandwidth of 1Gbps.

The Gujarat-based company, as per the agreement conditions, would also set up a state NOC (Network Operations Centre) at Chennai to integrate all village blocks under the project, including those under the other three packages.
Polycab, according to Jain, would be involved in continuous monitoring of the performance and health of the entire network in BharatNet-II in Tamil Nadu.

Inder Jaisinghani-headed company uniquely deployed the optical fibre-led initiative in Gujarat, and lit up as many as 3,650 village blocks creating a digital highway bridging the divide, and bringing government-to-citizen (G2C) services to as many as 67,75,000 rural households in the state.

Gujarat Fibre Grid Network Limited (GFGNL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) deployed the BharatNet initiative together with Polycab and GTPL Hathway Limited.

In Bihar, the company linked village blocks with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) exchanges, and laid 3,785 kilometres of optical cable in 65 blocks across 6 districts in Bihar.

Jain is optimistic to complete the Tanfinet program within the prescribed deadline, saying the company has uniquely distributed the entire initiative into monthly targets, and added that Tamil Nadu is a cyclone-prone area that makes it very tough for a master system integrator to maintain a service-level agreement (SLA) of 99%.

Polycab, as per agreement conditions, would undertake operations and maintenance (O&M) for four years that includes one year of warranty period for the Tanfinet program.

Tamil Nadu is of the late entrants into the ambitious BharatNet program that aims to connect 2.5 lakh village blocks encompassing more than 6 lakh villages nationwide with high-speed Internet to bridge digital divide.

In 2020, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry had to intervene and scrap the notice inviting tender (NIT) floated by Tanfinet following allegations of restrictive and discriminatory conditions in the wake of a complaint by a local non-profit organisation Arappor Iyakkam.

He said that the ‘do anything from anywhere’ economy requires a highly complex IT system, capable of managing the exponential data that it generates. Emerging technologies like edge computing, 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are revving both the discovery of insights from data and the digitization of key business processes.

It is expected that by 2025, most of this data will be processed outside a traditional data center or cloud. Edge solutions will therefore be the most feasible option for real-time data processing, and for harnessing data driven insights, at or near the source of data generation, Rao said.

“As IT infrastructure becomes more dispersed, Dell will focus on simplifying and modernizing, while reducing infrastructure costs,” he said. “Modern data management is set to change. Most of the world’s data is predicted to move out of the public cloud environment where non-real-time, centralized data is being managed. We anticipate that the entire data management ecosystem will develop and utilize edge IT capacity at the ingress and egress of their data pipelines, and remotely process and digest data on the edge.”

Egress in the world of networking implies traffic that exits an entity or a network boundary, while Ingress is traffic that enters the boundary of a network. Dell Technologies anticipates that as the data management ecosystem extends to the edge, the number of edge workloads will continue to grow dramatically, and data management will become an untried class of workload.

“Edge computing is one of the core components of the industrial internet of things,” Rao said. “It plays a significant role in accelerating the journey towards industry 4.0 adoption. The growing adoption of IoT across industries, exponentially increasing data volumes, network traffic, rising demand for low-latency processing and real-time.”

He added that the automated decision-making solutions was one of the factors driving the growth of edge computing. Rao also said that compute platforms at the Edge are likely to provide lightweight designs that can be successfully deployed despite spatial, environmental, power, and connectivity constraints. Thus, these designs are more secure and can support applications that demand insights in real-time.

One of the biggest challenges he foresaw was that enterprise IT infrastructure is being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data generated for analysis. Rao warned that too many organizations were trying to develop edge-specific technologies, operations, and architectures independent from those that already exist in their local data centers and the cloud and that the further organizations go down this path, the less likely they will be to absorb innovations, contain costs, maintain security, and avoid complexities with vendor management. “Hence, in this competitive landscape, to provide the best-in-class experience to their customers, organizations need to manage data effectively to extract maximum value from the edge to the cloud,” he said.

google: How Google may solve the big SIM card ‘problem’ with Android 13

Google may have cracked the code for eliminating physical SIM cards for good. It seems like the tech giant will solve this problem with Android 13.
SIM cards are at the heart of each phone and allow users to receive calls, send messages and even connect to the internet. These tiny modules are so essential to phones that manufacturers have to squeeze them in, regardless of the space constraints. The lack of space inside the devices has made the form factor shrink from full to mini, micro and eventually, to nano SIMs.
Nowadays, some phones are available with embedded SIMs (eSIMs). These new modules can replace the traditional cards. However, there is a problem with eSIMs that can restrict them from taking over and this is where this Android 13 feature comes in.
The limitations of an eSIM
The main problem that eSIMs face is providing dual SIM support. These chips are designed to work with a single service provider at a time. However, eSIMs can currently store multiple profiles on one chip and support switching between them, but there is a catch. An eSIM can keep only one profile active at a time. So, the only way to get dual SIM support with existing solutions is to buy a device with multiple eSIMs, multiple physical SIM cards, or an eSIM and a physical SIM card.
Why won’t the manufacturers just use two eSIMs?
Adding another eSIM slot to the already crammed up interior of the device will undermine the whole point of the technology. Even if eSIMs take up lesser space than physical cards, having two eSIMs would still limit available space.
How Google may solve this problem?
According to Android Police, Google’s solution will use something called multiple enabled profiles (MEP) that will allow multiple active SIM profiles on one eSIM. This means a single eSIM will be able to connect to two different carriers at the same time.
How is it expected to work?
Google’s MEP method gets more interesting as everything is likely to happen on a software level. Multiple logical interfaces will serve as independent communication channels between a SIM profile and the phone’s modem while maintaining a single physical connection between the components.
The company will also add API classes to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that will allow carrier apps to get information about the logical and physical interfaces along with the SIM profiles stored on them. Earlier reports suggested that Google is testing it on an engineering Pixel hardware.
When should we expect the arrival of this technology?
As per the reports, Google is likely to introduce this supercharged eSIM support on Android 13 as references of this technology are there is AOSP and the Android Developers website suggests its integration in the upcoming operating system.
Some new MEP APIs are also present in the second and hopefully, the last Android 13 Developer Preview. There will be more information about this feature as the beta versions of the upcoming OS will be released. The company plans to release six beta versions in six months starting from April
How will this feature help users?
This feature would potentially be a game-changer for people using two SIM cards on a single phone while leaving some extra room for smartphone manufacturers to utilise. This feature can, later on, be implemented on iOS and even Windows. However, it is important to note that Apple already allows iPhone 13 to use two eSIMs for two or more mobile plans.
